Earlier Airway Treatment, Toronto, CA
October 4-5, 2019
Toronto Airport Marriott
This lecture focuses on the importance of dentofacial orthopedics during early childhood well before permanent teeth have erupted. This session examines treatments that help correct/manage breathing and sleep disorders, mouthbreathing, habitual snoring, teeth grinding and other related conditions. The significant improvement in the child’s facial appearance will also improve the smile and self-confidence, which are so important during the developmental years. Secondary treatment needs are then moderated, and superior outcomes are achieved with patient benefits for a lifetime.
In this program, you will learn:
• Airway co-management issues; earlier screening with therapies
• Sleep disorders with medical co-management and allied therapies
• Behavioral, structural, functional and wellness therapies
• Benefits of 3D cone beam diagnostic and treatment applications
• Earlier treatment…the right treatment at the right time
• Transverse jaw and 3-dimensional arch discrepancies
• Facial asymmetries…essentials from the front
• Smile esthetics regarding occlusal plane, midlines, and chin location
• Mid-facial class III treatments…slow RPE + facemask therapy
• Class II mandibular imbalances

Introduction to Dr. Grummons and Dr. Robert Ricketts
Background Regarding Dr. Grummons:
Dr. Grummons is a Board Certified orthodontist, and has lectured before most American orthodontic organizations, and world-wide. His frontal analysis, TMD publications, and appliance innovations are sensible, progressive, and extensively utilized. Dr. Grummons is internationally recognized for his progressive and clinically sensible approaches to facial orthopedic, frontal asymmetry, TMD orthodontic co-management, and non-extraction orthodontic treatments. Dr. Grummons is an Associate Professor of Orthodontics at The Loma Linda University Medical Center (Dept. of Orthodontics).
Dr. Robert Ricketts Relationship and Influences
Dr. Robert Ricketts (affectionately known as "Rick") was a pioneer and has made legendary influences upon orthodontics. He favorably and forever changed the progressive orthodontic therapies to the benefit of clinicians and patients world-wide.
Dr. Ricketts and Dr. Grummons co-authored the last two publications which Rick helped write. This is very significant. Duane will connect us to Rick and his many stellar contributions and insightful thinking.
TMD issues, facial orthopedics, esthetic and facial harmonies, efficient bio-mechanics, surgical-orthodontic, complex treatments, and 3-dimensional asymmetry aspects were first championed by Dr. Ricketts. Duane credits Rick for enlightening his learning, and teaching us to really think. They teamed up for 25 years by teaching and advancing progressive techniques and orthodontic applications used around the world currently.
With each patient, we begin with the end in mind and clear objectives in place. Individualized treatment approaches are defined and achieved. In all that we do, let us copy nature in her fundamental majesty.
The Ricketts Tribute Celebration in Orlando in 2004 was a celebration of Dr. Ricketts contributions to orthodontics, and to lives of individuals around the world. It was memorable, elegant, classy, upbeat, and significant. Duane will bring us highlights of Rick's life and times in orthodontics when he lectures to us at this IAO meeting in San Antonio. This is another compelling reason to be in attendance.

Today’s iCat cone beam (CBCT) facial scans with radiology reports are extraordinary. It’s extraordinary what we can do with 3D software, animations, colorization and segmentations. The applications are stunning and revealing like we never knew or had before. Once we utilize this, we cannot be without it.
Patients want to be well informed. They want to be treated by a doctor and team who are leading edge. Let’s take an informative journey utilizing CBCT imaging with 3D information for orthodontics.
Dr. Grummons will present 3D from the orthodontic perspective and how 3D CBCT cone beam information influences 3D/4D diagnosis and treatment today. He will emphasize therapy integration by the orthodontist with restorative colleagues, periodontists, oral surgeons, and ENT specialists teaming up for best patient care and effective treatment using iCat 3D cone beam technology. Once we discover and apply CBCT information, we can never go back to only 2D.
Man’s mind once changed by a new idea, can never return to its original dimension.
